A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial involving 100 adults with mild-to-moderate age-related macular degeneration examined 20 mg of saffron per day. Researchers found modest improvements in certain measures of visual and retinal function compared with placebo.

Clinical Study

30 mg of saffron per day

Another randomized study followed 60 people with wet or dry age-related macular degeneration who received 30 mg of saffron per day or placebo for six months.

Researchers reported improvements in certain electroretinography measurements during follow-up, although not every outcome improved and some effects were not maintained throughout the entire study period.

Longer-Term Research

12 months of saffron supplementation

Longer-term research has also examined saffron supplementation. A study involving adults with mild-to-moderate age-related macular degeneration who took 20 mg of saffron daily for 12 months found improvements in some retinal measurements.

Because this extension study did not include a control group, larger and longer controlled trials are still needed.

How Might Saffron Support Healthy Vision?

Oxidative stress occurs when the production of reactive molecules exceeds the body's ability to neutralize them.
